I am planning on a tight budget, and don’t have the money to go all out with decor. What would you say are the top three things I should not skimp on?
Being faced with this question often, I always strongly suggest these three things: don’t skimp on quality linens, flowers or lighting. To save on your sensitive budget, your wedding designer can help you to create a wedding scheme that’s simple, yet classy, timeless and a perfect reflection of you as a couple.
In my honest opinion, an event isn’t an event without celebratory colour, flowers and party atmosphere lighting. These days, you can rent great quality linens at a cost effective price that match your overall wedding style, you can get your hands on some cost effective—be sure to choose something that’s in season, as they won’t be as pricey. And talk to your DJ about creating the perfect ambiance by setting the tone with uplights. A lot of DJs make lighting possible by offering packages deals with their services and lighting included.
I want to mix DIY decor with the services of a pro decorator. How can we make sure the look is unified?
For us, this happens more often than not. Our clients love to be part of the process, even though they’ve left the decor process in our hands, and I love it! It makes their wedding day even more special.
But my advice to be sure that your creative vision is unified with the creative vision of your pro decorator, constantly keep the lines of communication open. Let the decorator you’ve hired know about any changes you’ve made along the way, new ideas that you have and show them anything you’ve made for the wedding. What I often do with my clients is share a Pinterest board! This way, the client and decorator can pin new and fresh ideas constantly, comment on these pins and bounce ideas off of each other on a regular basis. This is a great way to keep in constant contact, keep the excitement building and make sure you and your pro are always on the same page. If you do these things, your wedding should end up being seamless—a perfect integration of your hand-created items and the decorators stock.
I’m planning a destination wedding, but don’t want to go for the resort’s decor. What are some ways to bring my own decor without having to fill multiple suitcases?
There are a few decor options that have become wedding staples that you could easily pack in a suitcase, keeping it at a reasonable weight. Try packing some paper lanterns—they are available in a variety of sizes and because they collapse to a flat circle, you can fit a large number in any suitcase. Also, bunting has become very popular—fabric or paper options are available. They can easily be folded and tucked away in between clothing and they basically weigh nothing. And there’s always the option of strings of lights—they aren’t heavy and you can now purchase strings that are on a battery pack, therefore you won’t have to plug the strings in, leaving your decor options wide open and you won’t have to worry about plug adaptors.
