Allison & Matt

Married August 29, 2015

Allison Young had been in Korea for about a year when she met Matt Chaput, a fellow Canadian and English teacher. After spending five years together working overseas the pair moved back to Nova Scotia, bought a house and soon after, got engaged. “I would be lying if I said I didn’t have a secret Pinterest board,” says Allison, an avid DIYer with an eye for detail. She happily made just about every piece of her wedding decor by hand, a decision that was part economical, but mostly passion. “I wanted to make sure we had a day that reflected our style. But I do love to do that stuff,” she says. “If I have free time, that’s what I want to be doing.” The stuff she’s talking about includes handmade centrepieces, table runners, table numbers, place card holders, monogrammed wine glasses, a marquee sign, a fabric backdrop and nearly 3,000 hand-folded paper cranes. “I needed something to fill the space,” says Allison, of her airy reception venue, Sainte-Famille Winery. She proceeded to dig into two months of daily folding (during her evenings and commutes) and then strung the paper birds on twine to make 20 foot streamers. “I read the folklore about the bride that folds 1,000 cranes having good luck. And it ties into a lot of Asian culture—and me and Matt’s time in Asia.” The couple also teamed up to build their own checkered dance floor, for ultimate good times, and wrote personal notes to every single guest in attendance. “It was like the best day of your life, with everybody you love more than anything and they’re all having an amazing time. It’s a crazy high,” says Allison. “I felt like every single moment was electric.”
