A beautiful barn wedding full of handmade details.
A large, macrame wall-hanging adorns Gorrman Lee and Jade-Elise Kirk’s living room wall, just above their sofa. It’s a memento from their wedding day, crafted with love by Jade-Elise’s sister.
“I’m a really colourful human being and my sister’s an artist, so she made all of these decorations for me. She’s my artistic muse,” Jade-Elise says, estimating that her sister spent a year making the colourful wall pieces and macrame hangings that make their wedding photos pop.
The pair met through friends— at a board game night, hitting it off right away—and their wedding was one that makes the old cliche about it being a union of two families, not two people, ring true. Living in Vancouver but wanting a wedding in their home province of Nova Scotia, Jade-Elise’s family homestead in Thorburn (complete with Pinterest-worthy barn) made the perfect location for the couple.
Decked out in her sister’s artwork and her mom’s handmade white bunting, the affair oozed bohemian flair but, more importantly, portrayed tight family bonds by weaving things together behind the scenes.
“My dad made the birch arch that we stood under, he designed it himself,” Jade-Elise says. Gorrman adds that one friend made their “totally hilarious” sugar-cookie cake topper, which was frosted to resemble the bride and groom, and that another friend was the day’s makeup artist.
“My whole family totally came together for me,” Jade-Elise adds. Sometimes when you tie the knot, those you love most help make it into a bow.
