Sean O’Leary and Lyn-Lyn Amores first spotted each other on the sidewalk after a morning mass at St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Victoria. He was new to the west coast, thanks to a Navy posting, and she liked his bright blue eyes.
“She just looked so beautiful to me. I walked up and introduced myself, said ‘I’m new to the city’ and asked her to go for coffee,” says Sean of his now wife, who of course said yes.
Not long after the pair began dating, Sean was re-posted to Halifax. With a promise ring on her finger, Lyn-Lyn stayed behind in BC, but after three months of making it work long-distance she decided she had to go too.
“I think it was love,” says Lyn-Lyn of what pushed her to make the move. “I felt comfortable with him after a short period of time. We had just met—we had our first few dates and it was just, different. I don’t know how to explain it.”
Life on the east coast brought an engagement, the birth of their son, more school for Lyn-Lyn, work for Sean and finally—this fall—a wedding.
“Having a traditional Filipino wedding was very important for me,” says Lyn-Lyn of the ceremony, which included the veil and cord, unity candle and coin customs. “I wanted them to know how Filipino weddings go. It’s very personal for me, I wanted guests to embrace Filipino culture as well.”
It was a day of fickle weather, shared values and forgotten cufflinks. There was something old, something blue, something new—and a perfectly timed rainbow. But amidst all of the intimate and picturesque moments, actually making it official resonated the most with the couple.
“It was saying ‘I do’ and wearing the ring,” explains Sean. “It was very
emotional.”
