Yewande Taiwo and Trisan Tettey started planning their wedding before Trisan even popped the question.
“A lot of people would prefer the ring and then the plans,” he says. “But I knew she had faith.”
Faith is a big part of their relationship. Yewande invited Trisan to her church on their second meeting and it became an important part of getting to know each other. Trisan admits that he wasn’t very religious then, but that her parish, the All Nations Full Gospel Church, really resonated with him.
“I really found it to be very enlightening and it kind of changed me a bit as I got to understand it more. I think that’s what’s holding us together, aside from our similarities. Our belief helps us in tough times and in good times as well.”
Their wedding weekend merged the traditional ceremonies from Ghana and Nigeria as well as a westernized white wedding. On the Friday before the big day, the families came together for a traditional engagement ceremony where Trisan had to “prove” his love and devotion to Yewande through a series of questions—Trisan likens it to a performance. “The two ladies that did it were so amazing. Just so funny,” he says.
When the wedding day finally came, nothing, not even the rain, could have dampened their spirits.“There’s a beautiful picture of me running into the church and someone is holding an umbrella,” says Yewande. “And I’m still just smiling like all you see is my teeth shining.”
The couple were announced as husband and wife to their congregation by Reverend Veronica Adu-bobie who travelled all the way from Ottawa to celebrate their love.
“I was just so happy. I couldn’t wait to kiss the groom!” says Yewande. “It was just an amazing moment. Like yeah, finally!”
